The Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at NYU

New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) is a highly respected center for research and advanced training in mathematics and computer science. NYU's world-class interdisciplinary graduate programs are known for their cutting-edge training in analysis and applied mathematics, including partial differential equations, differential geometry, dynamical systems, probability and stochastic processes, scientific computation, mathematical physics, and fluid dynamics.

The interdisciplinary focus is one of the greatest strengths of the Courant Institute's graduate programs. Courses, seminars, and research collaborations go far beyond traditional areas of pure and applied mathematics, covering diverse areas such as visual neural science, materials science, atmosphere/ocean science, cardiac fluid dynamics, plasma physics, mathematical genomics, and mathematical finance. Analysis plays a central role that provides a natural bridge between these subjects.

The Mathematics Department at the Courant Institute offers programs leading to Ph.D. degrees in mathematics, computational biology, and atmosphere/ocean science and mathematics. It also offers M.S. degrees in mathematics, scientific computing, and mathematical finance.

The graduate programs at the Courant Institute are offered in the very heart of the world's leading artistic and financial center in downtown Manhattan. The NYU campus is located in historic Greenwich Village, the long-time creative magnet for artists, writers, actors, musicians, and free thinkers.

Research Facilities

The Courant Institute Library has one of the nation's most complete and retrospectively rich mathematics collections, including many hard-to-obtain items in languages other than English.

Its collection comprises more than 64,000 volumes, including a burgeoning spectrum of electronic books and journals. The library is a campus wireless access point, and has a campus network-compatible printing facility.

Financial Support

Financial support is awarded to students engaging in full-time Ph.D. study, covering tuition, fees, and NYU's individual comprehensive student insurance. It offers, in academic year 2013-2014, a 9-month stipend of $27,440. Summer positions involving teaching, research, or computational projects are available to a number of the Ph.D. students.

Cost of Study

In 2013-2014, tuition is calculated at $1494 per point. Associated fees are $473 for the first point in fall 2013, $491 for the first point in spring 2014, and $64 per point thereafter. A full-time program of study normally consists of 24 points per year (four 3-credit courses per term).

Living and Housing Costs

University housing for graduate students is limited. It consists mainly of shared studio apartments in buildings on campus and shared suites in residence halls within walking distance of the university.
